Bernard John
Coxon
was born at Sudbury, Derbyshire on 21 January 1870, eldest child of
Theodosius
Coxon (1836-1936) and Ann Eliza Wiltshire (1842-1907). His father
was a builder, and was employed by Lord Vernon as caretaker, carpenter,
foreman, and eventually clerk of works on the restoration of Sudbury
Hall.
In 1891, Bernard was working as a carpenter in Sudbury. He
married
Elizabeth Marvel Knapp (born in 1872 at Kibworth, Leicestershire) at
Derby
on 6 February 1892, and they moved to live at Woolley Hall, north of
Barnsley
in Yorkshire. The 1901 Census showed Bernard as a "clerk of
works"
at Woolley. Bernard and Elizabeth had five children, and after
Elizabeth
died Bernard remarried Harriett Helen (Nellie) Keay.
Although Bernard J. Coxon worked primarily as a carpenter and builder, he appears to have developed photography as a sufficiently important sideline to have card mounts printed. While no directory listings have yet been found for him as a photographer, images of several photos taken by him have been contributed by family member Alan Walker. Further details and photographs of B.J. Coxon and his family may be found on Alan's web site. |
