Charles
Samuel Swift
was born in Coventry, Warwickshire in 1854, younger brother to William
Edward Swift, another Derby
photographer. In April 1881, both
brothers were living - with their mother and two other siblings - at 58
Warner Street, Derby St. Werburgh. William described himself
as a
lithographic artist, while Charles was a photographic artist.
Charles
married Emma Wadsworth (born c. 1855 at Allestree, Derbyshire) at
Chesterfield
in 1886, and they had one daughter Lydia May born in 1891 but died the
following year.
C.S. Swift set up his studio at 106 Normanton Road before 1891 (Kelly & Census), and was still shown at that address in 1895 (Kelly & Bulmer) and 1901 (Census). In 1903 he opened a second studio at 125 Normanton Road, where he remained until at least 1926-27. The premises at 106 Normanton Road appear to have remained open until 1906 (Adamson, 1998). Craven (1993) states that he was in business until 1933, and that he also had a studio in Skegness, Lincolnshire. The 1891 Census shows his brother W.E. Swift working as a photographer in Skegness. |
