The Derby
Stereoscopic
Company operated from a studio at 36 Victoria Street, Derby, with Frank Birch
as manager, from 1903
until
at least 1912 (Craven, 1993). These premises were previously
used by John
Burton & Sons
(1864-1866), Clement
Rogers (1871-1874), J.W. Price
(1876), Harry
J. Watson (1891-1895), Layton
& Lamb (1898-1899), Leonard Norman (1899-1900). A
recent addition to the portfolio (see below) suggests that the studio
remained open until at least c. 1916. |

William Henry Benford (1883-1917), by The Derby Stereoscopic Co., corner of St Peter's St & Victoria St., Derby Undated, but probably taken c. 1916 Format: Large print mounted on card Image © & courtesy of Roy Benford Notes by
RB: William Henry Benford was born on 6th November 1892 at 67
Gisborne Street, Derby, the eldest son of Jeremiah Benford (1866-1933)
and Kate Hardy (1863-1896). He married Rose May Beckett
(1894-1970) on 23rd October 1916 at St Luke’s, Derby. He
was an engine driver for LNER out of their Doncaster yard. He
died at Newmarket in October 1976. My dating of the photograph as
1916 is based upon the date of his marriage and there is also a
photograph of Rose Beckett taken by P & L E Swain, Derby 1a
Normanton Road, Derby. My speculation is that these photographs
may have been exchanged on their engagement. |
