Edwin
James and Joseph Cook Evans
were two sons of a Youlgreave draper and insurance agent, James Evans
(1842-1899) and his wife Annie Cook (1842-1892). Edwin was born
at Youlgreave in 1864, his younger brother Joseph two years
later. In his teens, Edwin was apprenticed to a joiner and by
1891 described himself in a trade directory as a "joiner &
wheelwright." Joseph Evans initially worked as a lead miner, but
in his early twenties became a pianoforte tuner. The 1895 and
1899 editions of Kelly's trade directory shows them still working as
joiner/weelwright and pianoforte tuner, respectively. However,
their father died in the latter half of 1899, and Joseph appears to
then have taken over as a Prudential Assurance agent. In 1912
(Kelly), Edwin was still described as a wheelwright, but Joseph Evans
was now the "Relieving Officer for
South District, Bakewell Union." Edwin Evans married Sarah Shimwell in 1883, and they had at least eight children. Joseph Evans married Mary Dorothea Toft in 1894, but were still childless in 1901. A single cabinet card is known, with the mount printed, "E.J. & J.C. Evans, Youlgrave, nr. Bakewell." Although difficult to date precisely, is is believed that this photo was taken prior to 1894, as the subject is known to have died in that year. |
