James Brennen was born c. 1819 at Long Acre, St Martin's-in-the-Fields, London. With his wife Ann and daughter Agnes he moved to Derby between 1845 and 1851, was working as a servant for John Butler, annuitant, at Duffield Road, St. Alkmund's parish in April 1851.
Brennen established a daguerreotype gallery at 14 Irongate (Birks, 1934) by late 1854 (Anon 1885), although Craven (1993) claims a slightly earlier commencement date of 1853. The expiry of Richard Beard's country-wide daguerreotype patent in August 1853 may have been a major stimulus. In late 1856 he was listed as a photographic artist, still at 14 Irongate (White, 1857). By 1860 he had moved to a new studio at 12 Wilmot Road (Anon, 1860a), and this is where he and his family were shown living at the time of the census in early April 1861, again describing himself as a photographic artist.
The Derby Mercury reported in May 1860 that Brennen had taken several pictures of the then new iron and coal works and landscape at Oakerthorpe. In April 1861 he "secured a photograph of [the] lithographed portrait of W.T. Cox, Esq., the High Sheriff and Major [of Derby]." A trade directory probably compiled in late 1861 shows Brennen with premises at both 12 Wilmot Street and 14 Irongate (Drake, 1862). By 1866, according to the Derby electoral registers, he appears to have vacated the Wilmot Street premises and moved wholly to 108 Friargate, probably into premises previiously occupied by George B. Coggan. Then, on 23 January 1866, according to a report in The Derby Mercury the following day, disaster struck (Anon, 1866a):
Early yesterday morning a fire was discovered at the photographic studio of Mr. Brennan, in Iron-gate. An alarm was speedily raised, and Mr. Hilton, Inspector Fearn, and the fire brigade were in immediate attendance. At the first glance the chief perceived that all hopes of saving the wooden studio must be abandoned, whilst the flames threatened to destroy the adjoining buildings. The strong stream of water was therefore used to extinguish the flames that were licking the walls of Mr. Evans's warehouse. In this effort success was speed, and by energetic exertions the brigade soon subdued the fire. This was not effect, however, till Mr. Brennan's rooms were gutted, and his valuable instruments and his chemicals all destroyed. Mr. Brennan was insured for 250 l. in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire company, and we hope this sum will all but cover his loss.It is presumed that the insurance company did pay out promptly, because he was back on his feet towards the end of May (Anon, 1866b):
Removal. Mr. Brennen's new photographic studio, Friar-gate, entrance two doors from the Savings Bank.In 1870 the studio is shown by Harrod's trade directory at 108 Friargate, and he remained at this address until 1898 (Craven, 1993), with trade directory listings continuing to show him working as a photographer until 1895. The electoral registers for 1892-1893 show that Brennen also briefly had a warehouse at 35 Cowley street. James Brennen's wife died before 1891, and his unmarried daughter Agnes was living with him in Derby in 1891. However, no trace has been found of either of them in the 1901 Census, and no deaths registered prior to that date, so it is not clear what happened to him after 1898.
Mr. B. begs to inform his Friends and the Public generally, that his Studio is now complete, and he will be happy to receive sitters. Daily attendance from ten till dusk.
