BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Henry Brice was born c. 1831 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, a son of James & Catharine BRICE. His father was a tailor and hair cutter, while his mother was a school mistress. In 1855 Henry married Harriet VAUGHAN from Halberton, Devon. They initially lived at Bath, Somerset, where they had at least three children before moving to Exeter between 1858 and 1861.

According to Scott (1985), Henry Brice intially worked as a colourist for the photographer Owen Angel. In 1861 the census describes him as a portrait painter. Ten years later, he was shown as a "photographer and portrait painter". Scott gives the following dates and addresses:

It is not known, however, how long he continued in the photographic business, because subsequent censuses merely show him as a portrait painter. Henry died at Exeter in 1903. His youngest son Alfred became an artist too, describing himself as an "illustrator of periodicals" in April 1891.
