BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Owen Angel was born c. 1821 at Totnes, Devon. He married Mary Ann Brimacombe at Exeter in 1843. They had a daughter and three sons, although only their daughter Marian Angel (1844-1883) survived to adulthood. She married a land surveyor George Heath (1840-1905), and lived at Bedford Circus, near Exeter.

Owen Angel started working in Exeter in the early 1840s as an engraver and a printer, became a lithographer in about 1846. The 1851 Census, taken in early April, shows him living at 94 Fore Street, and working as a "lithographer employing 3 men and 6 apprentices." Scott (1985) shows him at 92 Fore Street in August 1852. By January 1855 he had added photography to his repertoire, advertising "daily photographic portraits" in the Trewman's Exeter Flying Post, and listed additional premises at 1 Market Street. Later that year, in August, 5 High Street was shown as his address, and another listing shown him as "photographer to the Exeter School of Art and the Cornwall Photographic Society." In 1859 and 1860, he advertised in the Western Counties Herald and Bridgwater Mercury, listing premises at 5 High Street.

In April 1861, the census shows both his wife Mary Ann Angel and his eldest daughter Marian Angel assisting in the studio. In addition, they had a young woman, Jane Lens Aldous, working as an artist. From 1861 until about 1889, the studios were situated in premises at 11 High Street and at 13 (later 6) Arcade, Exeter, although he and his wife lived first at Etwick Road, St Thomas and later at 80 Black Boy Road, St Sidwell, Exeter. A carte de visite from the late 1880s (see image #oangel05 below) shows that there was also a studio at 16 High Street. By 1893, the studio premises appears to have moved to 21 Longbrook Street, and then to 25 Mount Dinham, St David's Hill in the following year. He appears to have remained in business until at least 1903, and died at Exeter in 1909.
