James Byron Clayton was baptised at St Mary's, Nottingham on 13 August 1826, one of four surviving children of James Clayton (d. 1863) and his wife Ann ne Soar (1798-1873), who operated a basketmaking business at Greyhound Yard. He was married in 1845 to Mary Taylor, daughter of a coal miner from Underwood.

SRY |- Joseph CLAYTON b. 8 Feb 1804 bapt. Wesleyan Church, Nottingham NTTReminiscences preserved by Byron-Clayton family tradition have suggested that James Clayton senior founded the photographic business in 1844. Research by Heathcote & Heathcote (2001) has failed to find any hard evidence of this, although he is known to have been artistically inclined and worked briefly as a portrait painter. It has also been suggested that he may have worked surreptitiously in the mid-1840s, taking portraits at his basket making work rooms in Greyhound Street. The daguerreotype patent holder in Nottinghamshire at this time was a Hungarian emigr named George Popowitz, who operated from the Bromley House studio in Angel Row, Nottingham and rigidly enforced his monopoly.
The first documentary evidence of a member of the Clayton family working in the photographic profession appears to be when James' younger brother Walter Clayton opened a photographic gallery adjacent to the basket-making business by the end of February 1856 (Heathcote & Heathcote, 2001). In the following year (1857) James followed suit, opening a studio in Ram Yard, off Long Row East. As a means of distinguishing his business from that of his brother, he traded under the name "James Byron." On card mounts printed in 1877 and 1878, he advertised as having been "established [in] 1852," but later modified this claim slightly to read, "Established Quarter of a Century" on mounts clearly dated from 1880 to 1884 (suggesting a slightly later date of c.1855). This was around the period when the daguerreotype patents lapsed and the patent-free wet collodion process developed by Frederick Scott Archer made the profession far more accessible (Hannavy, 1997). Nottingham experienced a flurry of new practitioners between 1854 and 1858, and by the latter date the Clayton brothers were amongst twenty or so photographers offering collodion positive and other photographic portraits in Nottingham.
As James Byron he was listed in Wright's Nottingham Directory for 1858, at the premises in Ram Yard. The census enumerated in April 1861 shows him living with his wife and fourteen year-old son Joseph in Parliament Street. It is likely that he began to offer the newly popularised and much more affordable carte de visite format to his customers shortly after its introduction into Nottingham by fellow photographers A.G. Grant and A.W. Cox in 1862 (Heathcote & Heathcote, 2001). There is a possibility that two carte de visite portraits by J. Clayton at Staveley may have been taken by James temporarily working outside Nottingham.
The online archive of images at Picture the Past includes a carte de visite portrait from the Nottingham City Council (Ref. NTGM011926) depicting two identified Nottingham worthies, dated 1865, and ascribed to "J. Clayton." If accurately dated, it is interesting to note the use of the surname Clayton by either James or his son Joseph in this year. The earliest designs shown in the portfolio below, incorporating the commonly used "crown and garter" motif enclosing a JB monogram, and in turn surrounded by ornate and rectangular frames, are probably from the mid- to late 1860s.
It seems likely that James' son Joseph Byron Clayton was helping his father in the studio in his late teens, from around 1863-1864 onwards. By early 1867, however, he was working in London and was assisting a photographer named Sanderson with a studio at 21 Blackfriars Road in Southwark. On 13 April 1867 Clayton purchased the business from Sanderson "with all the apparatus and stock of photographs, &c." (Anon, 1867) Although no trade directory entries have yet been located for his stay in London by either this author or Heathcote & Heathcote (2001), who carried out extensive searches, a carte de visite mount (see Type III below, #jbyron02) indicates that he was trading at "21 Blackfriars Road, London S." under the name Byron Clayton and described himself, perhaps rather hopefully, as a "Parliamentary & Portrait Photographer." The portrait of a well dressed young man with top hat and gloves, presumably taken at these premises, demonstrates that he was already a fairly competent practitioner with an adequately furnished, if not quite luxurious, studio. In late July 1867, his former employer's estranged wife and an accomplice were charged at Southwark with breaking and entering Clayton's studio earlier that month and stealing photographic equipment and materials (Anon, 1867).
In January 1868 Joseph Byron Clayton, still shown as a photographer living at working at 21 Blackfriars Road, was charged with receiving goods "well knowing it to be stolen" from a nearby hat manufactory. Despite his plea of not guilty, the court decided that the evidence indicated otherwise, and sentenced him to twelve months' hard labour (1868a, 1868b). Although details of his incarceration and subsequent release have not been found, this was presumably the end of his London studio, although it is conceivable that someone was hired by his father to look after the business in the mean time. Several card mounts exist (see Type IV below), probably dating from the period 1867-1869, showing the firm of J. Byron & Sons [sic] of "Ram Yard, Market Place, Nottingham & at 21 Blackfriars Rd, London."
By April 1871, Joseph had returned to Nottingham, as the census shows him living at 4 Ram Yard. His parents were living at 10 Ram Yard, otherwise known as the "Ram Hotel." Both were situated close to the photographic rooms which were now being run as the partnership of James Byron & Son. The arrangement continued until 24 January 1876, when a notice in the London Gazette announced the dissolution of the partnership, with the business being under Joseph Clayton's sole proprietorship (Anon, 1876), although he continued to trade under the name Byron & Son until at least 1878 (see Type XV below).
In the early to mid-1870s the firm of J. Byron & Son advertised additional premises in Leicester at "4 London Road & 24 Gallowtree Gate," both on the reverse of their card mounts (see Types XII and XIII below) and in trade directories (Heathcote & Heathcote, 1982). This developed into a partnership between Joseph and his uncle Walter Clayton, trading as The Magnet Studio at 4 London Road (see Type XVII below). The arrangement lasted only for a year or two, because by c.1879 Walter Clayton was operating the Magnet Studio alone.
Joseph Clayton married Julia Lewin at Nottingham in November 1875, and his mother Mary died the same year. After the dissolution of the partnership his father James appears to have moved away from the photographic trade, perhaps due to ill health, and was described in trade directories as an artist (Kelly, 1876a & 1881b). James Byron Clayton died at Chester in late 1880, at the relatively young age of 54.
In the late 1870s, Joseph had been operating from the original premises started by his father in Ram Yard, off Long Row. However, in 1880 he opened new studio at 2 Bottle Lane, on the corner with Bridlesmith Gate (Kelly, 1881b), simply as J. Byron, and was living in the building with his wife and young family of three children on census night in April 1881. The Ram Yard premises probably closed in early 1881 (Heathcote & Heathcote, 2001). The mid-1880s saw Joseph experiencing some financial difficulties. Bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against Joseph Byron Clayton (trading as Joseph Byron), "photographer and dealer in works of art," in January 1886 (Anon 1886a & 1886b) and in early August a discharge was suspended for one month (Anon, 1886c), although the final outcome is unclear.
By late 1887 or early 1888 Joseph Byron had moved again, and was listed as a photographer at 1 Smithy Row, Nottingham (Wright, 1888). However, within months he had packed up altogether and was on his way to America, arriving in New York with his wife and eldest daughter on board the Gallia on 20 September 1888. The remaining four children followed in the charge of Julia's mother a year later, arriving on the Servia on 28 October 1889.
For a year Joseph Byron practised as a freelance press photographer for the Illustrated American and other clients, before making a breakthrough into what would become a lengthy career in stage photography (Simmons, 1999). His son Percy Byron followed him into the practice, but in 1906 moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he established a photographic business with his brother-in-law Gustave May. After a decade of growth, when the Byron-May experienced a significant downturn in business during the Great War, he returned to New York and rejoined his father, spearheading a new specialisation into ship photography.
Joseph Byron died in 1923, after which Percy took over the Byron Company and continued to run it successfully until the middle of the Second World War, when business once again declined, and the company was finally wound up in October 1942 (Simmonds, 1999). Percy Byron died on 10 June 1959.
