Ernest Rudolph Leonhardt was born c. 1858 in Germany, and probably emigrated to England some time in the early 1890s.  In 1899 he married Catherine Whitt at Nottingham.  She was born in 1858 in Nottingham, daughter of a tailor Frederick Whitt (1821-1893) and his wife Elizabeth.  E.R. Leonhardt operated a studio with Lewis Leonhardt - perhaps his brother - at 8 High Street, Eckington, Derbyshire from about 1893.  According to Adamson (1997), Rudolph ran the business alone from 1898 until 1900.

At the time of the census at the end of March 1901, Ernest was living with his wife in Nottingham and described himself as a photographer.  Heathcote & Heathcote (n.d.) show Leonhardt at 2½ or 3a Exchange Walk, Nottingham from 1900 until 1903.
By 1903, however, he was living at 124 Bosworth street, Leicester, and had opened a new studio at 7 Horsefair street in that city.  A 1904 Nottingham trade directory showed him still with a studio at 8 Albert street, Nottingham which, according to Heathcote & Heathcote, remained in operation from 1904 until 1907.  His premises in Horsefair street Leicester remained listed in directories until 1914, and then by 1916 appear to have moved to 41 Granby street, Leicester.  It is not known how long he remained in business.
