Edward Smith

of Derby

Edward Smith worked from studios in Upper Brook Street and Bramble Street, Derby for twenty years from at least 1871 until 1891, and continued to practise until at least 1901, although perhaps under the auspices of anothert studio.  He was briefly in partnership with William Taylor at Agard Street in 1885.

Edward Smith was born c. 1831-32 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.  He married Harriet (surname unknown, born c. 1830-32 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire).

Craven (1993) states that Edward Smith was in business in Derby from 1871 to 1891.  Both the 1871 Census and Wright (1874) show him with a studio at 52 Upper Brook Street, although the census record describes him merely as an artist.  In the late 1870s (certainly by 1881) he had moved to Bramble Street (North side) - perhaps following Thomas Battersby - where he remained until at least 1891 (Census & Kelly).  The 1901 census still shows him practising as a photographer, although the lack of any directory entries suggest that perhaps he worked for another studio.  Craven also suggests that Smith was in partnership with William Taylor at 19 Agard Street in 1885.  Adamson (1997) states that Frank Birch took over from Smith at the Bramble Street premises in 1894.

Notes (MJ & BP): William Tipper was born at Hollington and baptized 6 Oct 1844 at Longford DBY (see Martin's web site for full details of this family).  He was a wheelwright and married Hannah Rodgers (born c. 1848 Postern DBY) in 1868.  They had sons William (born 1871 at Hollington) and Ernest W. (born c.1874-1875 at Hollington), and a daughter Harriet (born 1878 at Derby).  This photo was probably taken in about 1877, shortly after they moved to 11 Manchester Street, Derby St Werburgh's from Hollington, and before the birth of daughter Harriet in mid-1878.
