Frank Day (1870-)

of Heanor & Derby

Frank Day operated a studio in Heanor from the late 1890s until at least 1912, from premises in Station Road, Ray Street and Mansfield Road.  In the early 1920s he also had a studio in Derby.

Frank Day was born in Nottingham in 1870, the youngest of three sons of William & Sarah Ann Day.  His father, who was a shoemaker, died  when Frank was still a child, and his mother remarried a dyer, John Ward.  Frank followed his step-father into this industry when a teenager, but appears to have become a photographer some time in the late 1890s.  It is possible that he worked as a travelling photographer for the Nottingham photographers Freckleton & Co. of 63 Long Row, Nottingham.  He married Gertrude Maud Allsop in 1897, and their first child Harold Edgar was born at Smalley in early 1898.  By April 1901 they were living at 169 Ray Street in Heanor, and Frank was working as a photographer.  Adamson (1997) shows Day with a studio at Mansfield Road, Heanor from 1906 until 1912.  A cabinet card (see below) also indicates that he had a studio at Station Road in Heanor, but it is not know whether this was before or after the Ray Street era.  A large format mounted photo (see below) shows that he also operated from a studio at 108 Pear Tree Road, Derby, probably after the First World War.

Notes by BP:  John Miller, who was my own gg-grandfather as well as Lynne's great-grandfather, was variously a brick and pipemaker, grocer, shopkeeper, farmer and sub-postmaster at Weston Underwood.  It appears from this photograph that he may also have operated a carrier service between Derby and Weston Underwood.
