Frederick
Joseph Boyes
was born in 1861 at Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales, son of a Methodist
clergyman,
John Boyes and his wife Caroline Boyes (formerly Hughes née
Sturch).
He married Sarah Winifred Patson (born at Peterborough c. 1874) in
Derby in 1900.
Although the electoral registers only show him in Derby from November 1889, Boyes was operating from premises at 22 Osmaston Road, Derby by early 1887 (Kelly) and was still there in 1891 (Kelly). By 1895 (Bulmer & Kelly), the studio appears to have expanded to occupy the neighbouring building (No. 24) as well, although the electoral registers continue to show him living at No. 22. He was still in Derby at the time of the 1901 Census, and later directories show that the business was operating as late as 1926-27. He is also shown variously as a picture frame and art dealer. The Picture the Past web site includes a photograph of employees outside the main entrance to Derby Power Station on Sowter Road, taken by F.J. Boyes in the 1890s. |

Lucy Mary
"Mag" Payne (1876-1953) by Frederick J. Boyes, Electric & Daylight Studio, 22 & 24 Osmaston Road, Derby Undated, but possibly taken c. April 1898 Size: 106 x 166 mm Format: Cabinet Card Negative No. 14446 Image © & courtesy of Brett Payne Mag was the eldest daughter of Henry & Henrietta Payne (shown above). This photo is mounted on card is very similar to that of her parents - apart from the number - and also shows the same white spotting of the photograph. It seems possible, therefore, that it was also taken c. April 1898, when she would have been 21 years old, and probably in service with a local family (perhaps the Boams). |

Alfred
& Charlotte Horobin and their nieces by Frederick J. Boyes of 22 & 24 Osmaston Road, Derby, ca. 1915-1916 Format: Postcard Image ©

Jackson

Notes by Sally Jackson: A postcard pic of my grandparents, Alfred Irvin Horobin (b. 1885 Derby) and his wife Charlotte Louisa Brady (b. Belturbet, Cavan, Ireland). The two girls I believe are the daughters of his half brother, Arthur Swinfield Newton (b. Derby) and his wife Lillia Tomlinson. Winifred was born in in Derby in 1901. I believe the younger one was called Doris, and have yet to find her birth. It must have been a wartime visit from Ireland to Derby for my grandparents, as he was in the British army. I would therefore put the date around 1915-16, as the older girl looks about 16. The picture has an imprint in the bottom right hand corner: "Frederick J Boyes, 22 & 24 Osmaston Rd Derby". I would love to get in touch with any descendants of the Newtons. There were three brothers, Charles Edward Gibson Newton and John Basil Newton, whose mother Mary Newton then married William Henry Horobin. My grandfather was the middle son with older brother William Henry Horobin (b. 1882), and younger Frederick Horobin (b. 1891) who I believe was in the fire brigade at Derby. The Irish family had no contact with the Derby one... apart from this one photograph! |
