George Edgar was born c. 1825 at
Sheffield in Yorkshire. Little is known of his family life.
He had a son George, born c. 1852 in Sheffield. According to Adamson (1997) Edgar was in partnership with John Stringfellow taking photographs at Saltergate in Chesterfield for a brief period in December 1858 and early 1859. After this partnership broke up, Edgar travelled to various other towns in Derbyshire, using a mobile studio. He was recorded at Kemp's Croft, Alfreton in 1859 and in January 1860, when his tent was damaged during a thunderstorm. Later that year, he was based at Sterland's Yard, Somercotes, at the Causeway, Wirksworth, and finally at the White Horse Inn in Ashbourne. The 1861 Census found him lodging in Market Place of Ashbourne, and by 1864 he was operating from St John Street in Ashbourne. Nothing at all is known about him after this date. |
