Gervase
Gibson
was born in about
1839 at Radford, near Nottingham. He married Elizabeth Dexter
at
Radford in 1860, and they had four children before she died in
1866. Gervase married a second time three years later, to
Annie
Reynolds, and they had a further three children. An outline
of
the Gibson family is shown below, with those members who are known to
have worked in the business highlighted in bold type.
Heathcote & Heathcote (1979) show Gervase Gibson at 16 Osmaston St, Nottingham in 1881, and at 73 Willoughby Street, Nottingham in 1883. Presumably these entries were extracted from trade directories, which were probably compiled late the previous year. By the time of the April 1881 Census, Albert Gibson is shown as a photographer, with the family were living at the Provision Shop, 73 Willoughby Street, Lenton, Nottingham. However, Gervase's profession is hown as "lace maker." As G. Gibson & Son they had a succession of premises in Nottingham, including the Willoughby Studio at 8½ Peck lane (off South parade) (where they followed Alfred Gadd, from 1885 to 1895, and were followed in turn by John Parkin) and the Borough Chambers at 8a King street (1895-1904). The business "G. Gibson & Son(s)", comprising Gervase, Albert, and later second son John, was operating from premises at 30 St. Peter's Street, Derby between 1895 and 1900 (Adamson, 1997). The Derby Electoral Registers for 1898-1900 show John Gibson with a studio in St. Peter's Street, while he lived first at Colyear Street, then in Drury Lane. By April 1901, however, the census shows that John had returned to Nottingham. In 1904 son Arthur Reynolds Gibson, who had previously worked as an assistant in his father's shop (1891) and as a music teacher, was operating his own business at the Town Club chambers, Wheeler gate, Nottingham. However, he does not appear to have kept this studio open for long, as by 1910 he was working as an artist, from premises at 65a Long row west. The contribution of Gervase's daughter Annie Gibson, who was shown as a photographic assistant in both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, appears not to have been acknowledged in the name of the firm! Gervase probably retired from an active role in the business after 1904, as subsequent directory entries show the business as either the Nottingham Photographic Works (briefly from c. 1913-1914) or "A. Gibson & Son" at the Royal Chambers, 30 Bridlesmith gate, Nottingham until at least 1916. Albert appears to have brought his eldest son Albert Claude into the firm from about 1910. Adamson (1997) shows "Gibson & Sons" with a studio at 92 St Peter's St, Derby from 1903 until 1907, although it is not clear which family members were active in this studio during this period. |

Class
portrait, including boys, master & mistress, St Chad's Church
Schools, Derby, 1895 by Gibson & Sons of 30 St Peter's St., Derby, 8 Peck Lane, Nottm. Dated 1895 Format: Large format Size: Mount 216 x 165.5 mm Photo 199 x 135.5 mm Image © & collection of Brett Payne Notes: According to Kelly's 1895
trade directory, St Chad's School in Gordon Street, Derby was a mixed
school erected in 1888 for 450 boys and girls, and 230
infants.
By 1895 it had an average attendance of 600. Thomas George
Seymour (1865-) was master, while Mrs. Ada Sarah Atherley (1860) was
the infants' mistress. The 37 boys shown in this photo only
include a small proportion of the total boys in the school at that time
(presumably about 300). Unfortunately there is no sign
showing
which class or classes are represented. It is possible that
the
gentleman standing at left is Mr. Seymour, and that the lady on the
right is Mrs. Atherley. |
