George Henry Eustace

of The Park Studio, Osmaston & Grimsby

George Hy. Eustace briefly operated a studio at Osmaston, near Derby, in the late 1890s before moving to Grimsby in Lincolnshire, where he was in business until at least 1919.

George Henry Eustace was born c. 1865 at Caversham, near Reading in Berkshire, son of a railway agent's manager George James Eustace (1833-) and his wife Mary.  It seems unlikely that George Henry was related to the family of photographers William Harrington Eustace (-1867), his wife Mary Ann Eustace (c1818-1884) and their son Alfred John Eustace, who had premises in Reading - first 106 London Street, later at 98 Oxford Street - from at least 1861until 1901.  George H. Eustace married Jeanette Augusta Darling (born at Church Gresley, Derbyshire c. 1864) at Bedminster in early 1891, and they initially lived in Milford, near Salisbury, where George Henry worked as a bank clerk.  They had twin daughters a year later, before moving to Leeds (Yorkshire), where a son Charles was born in early 1894.

It is not clear when G.H. Eustace first started working as a photographer, but a second son (Roger) was born at Derby in 1897, and it was at around that time that the photo below was taken, at "The Park Studio", Osmaston, near Derby.  By April 1901, however, they had moved to 306 Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, where George set up another studio.  Trade directory entries demonstrate that he worked from these premises until at least 1919, with a second studio operating at 39 Freeman Street, Grimsby, by 1919.  Derbyshire trade directories for 1895 and 1899 do not include listings for G.H. Eustace's premises at Osmaston, so it seems likely that the studio was fairly short-lived.
