George
Julian
Jackson
was born at Belper in 1849, the eldest of five sons of Belper nailmaker
Frederick
Jackson (1825-1873) and his
wife Hannah
(c.1820-1874).
As teenagers George and his brothers also became nailmakers.
The 1871 Census shows Frederick as a "photographer and nailmaker."
George married at Belper in late 1874, and in Wright's Trade Directory dated September that year was listed as a photographer, at Chapel Hollow in Belper. By April 1881, although he was still living at Chapel Hollow, his studio had moved to The Butts in Belper. It is likely that he had taken over this studio from Thomas B. Mellor, who used the premises from c. 1867 until 1874. By April 1891, Jackson was living at Kiln Lane, Belper, but continued working from his studio at "The Butts" until at least 1912. George and Hannah had no children. |

Young
woman by G. Jackson of The Butts, Belper Undated, but probably taken in the late 1870s or early-1880s Format: Carte-de-visite Image © & courtesy of Stephanie Hitchcock Notes by SH: I am unable to identify this woman, except to say she is from either the Belshaw or Prince family. Unfortunately this was my father's, who died 2 years ago, aged 86. I only discovered it after his death, and his only surviving sister is unable to identify the subject. |

Landslips,
possibly at Crich Stand by G. Jackson of The Butts, Belper Undated, but probably taken in the mid-1880s Format: Carte-de-visite Size: Mount 63.5 x 104.5 mm Photo 58 x 94 mm Image © & collection of Brett Payne Notes (from "Alex"): The
2nd
stone tower was damaged by a landslip in June or July of
1882. I
believe that the photo shows upturned piles of earth/turf etc. in front
of the tower (opened 1851). I have other photos, same size,
paper
and backing and of different subjects that date from the early 1880's,
all from the same source. I would assume that the
photographer would have travelled to Crich after hearing of the
landslip which also damaged/destroyed some cottages. |
