George
Renwick was born at
Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire in 1849, one of nine surviving
children (5 sons
and 4 daughters) of James Renwick (1816-1900) and Rebecca Cheshire
(1817-1892). James was a store and timekeeper in an iron
foundry,
and initially George followed his father and older brothers into the
trade - the 1871 Census shows him aged 22, still living at home (105
New Street) and working as an iron moulder. Five years later he was working as a photographer; an 1876 trade directory shows him at New Street, so presumably he was still working from home. By April 1881, however, he had moved to his own premises at 30 Station Street, Burton-upon-Trent, where he remained for over twenty five years. In 1891, the census includes in his household a photographer's assistant Mary A. Potts, aged 35. His niece Mary Ann Renwick Potts (b. 1874) was also described as a photographer's assistant in 1891 - although she was living with her parents in Aston at the time, it is possible that she worked for her uncle at some stage prior to her marriage in 1894. In 1901, another niece Lilian Barbara Renwick (1886-1905) was living with her mother in Burton, and was described in the census as "learning photography". Presumably she, too, was working in her uncle George's studio. The premises remained at 20 Station Street until at least 1905, but by 1912 had moved to 4 Bank Square. A 1916 directory shows him at 6 Bank Square. George Renwick never married. |
