George
Statham was born at Stanton-by-Bridge, Derbyshire on 17 December
1845, one of four sons and three daughters of an inn keeper, farmer and
carrier, William Statham (1811-1876) and his wife Jane Bailey (d.
1874). He married Anne Chittim in Derby in 1866, and appears to
have lived there from about that date. He worked first as a
striker (1871 - home at 8 Mount Street, St Werburgh) and then as a
blacksmith (1881 - home at 76 Shaftesbury Cres, Litchurch). From the existence of a single cabinet card dated with a fair degree of confidence, George Statham is known to have operated a photographic studio from his home at 57 Sale Street, Litchurch, Derby, probably fairly briefly, in the late 1880s. By 1891 he had become an insurance agent, and in 1901, shortly after moving to Castle Donington, he was working as an agent for a sewing machine company. |
