George Vaughan Sankey was born
at
Church Gresley, Derbyshire in 1842, one of eleven children of a master
potter Matthew Sankey (c.1814-1866) and Esther Smith
(1817-1902). George initially followed his father and elder
brother into the pottery industry, and at the time of his marriage to
Lucy Hall (c.1848-1898) in 1880, he still described himself as a potter. However, by April the following year he was working as a bookseller and photographer - according to the census. Between then and 1888, he operated a studio from his home on Woodville Road, Swadlincote (or Swadlincote Road, Woodville depending on which source you believe), but by 1891 he had moved to new premises at 67 Market Street, Common Side, Church Gresley. He remained in business at this location until his death in 1912. His brother John Sankey appears to have taken over the bookseller/stationer's shop. |
