Herbert Batteson was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1884, son of a slater and beerhouse keeper Mark Batteson (1848-1899) and his wife Sarah Singleton (1842-1913).  By the time of the 1901 Census, he was working as a photographer's assistant.  He was married in 1904, and had opened his own studio at 31 Packer's Row, Chesterfield by 1912.  In 1915 and 1917, he is also shown as operating from premises at Knifesmith Gate, but maintained the studio in Packer's Row until at least the late 1920s.
