Harold Burkinshaw was born at Belper in 1874, the youngest of three sons of local chemist and druggist William Thomas Burkinshaw (born 1843 Killingholme, Lincolnshire) and his wife Alice Crowther. As a teenager he worked as an assistant in his father's shop, but by 1901 he described himself as a photographic artist. Robert Silverwood (see below) has suggested that he took over Norman McAuslan's studio between 1902 and 1905, after McAuslan had moved to Australia for health reasons. Kelly (1912) shows Burkinshaw working from premises at New Road in Belper. A contributed post card (see below) and a 1909 advertisement (at right) suggest that he also had premises on King Street, Belper. | ![]() |
Received from Terry Corner: Harold Burkinshaw's photographic shop on the corner of Chapel Street and King Street Belper. The picture has been taken looking along Chapel Street, with King Street immediately to the left of the shop, which is the bungalow type building to the left displaying photographs and with the last three letters of his name in view. The shop. which had since served as a cafe and estate agents, was demolished about mid 2005. Scanned from Rod Jewell`s book, "Images of Belper & Ambergate" ISBN 1 85983 029 3 |

"The
Laurels", Albert Street, Belper, by Harold Burkinshaw of New Road,
Belper, Summer 1907 Size: Large format 175mm x 254mm Plain back Image © & courtesy of Robert Silverwood

Notes by Robert Silverwood: I also have a post card of part of the same image (not scanned) which has written on the back, in a hand which looks contemporary to the photo, "The Laurels Photographed by Harold Burkinshaw in 1907 Summer". This house is where Norman McAuslan's widow Louisa and their daughters, Doris (my grandmother) and Peggie, lived after they returned from Australia in 1905. It is they who are in the garden in the photo. I see from the 1901 census that Harold was working as a photographic artist from his parents' home in Church Street, Belper. All this seems to suggest that Harold may have taken over Norman's business in New Road between 1902, when he was too ill to work, and 1905, when he died. |
