Hans Peter Hansen was born on 6 August 1886 at 5 Hodsman Court, Adelaide Street, Hull, Yorkshire, son of a Danish merchant seaman Christian Marco Sophus Hansen (1841-1928) and his English wife Emma Hansen née Jackson (1844-1933). Hans' parents were separated and his mother later remarried, and although at the age of two he was living with an aunt in Hull, he was brought up in Denmark. As a young man he was sent to work as a riveter in the dock yards in Hull, where he lodged with a widow and her two step-daughters. He married one of these girls, Mary-Jane Hardern, at Hull on 20 August 1892, and was offered work as a builder/joiner by his mother-in-law's Gratton family in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Hans Peter and Mary-Jane had five children, one dying at the age of a few months old. He only moved into photography once he and his family had become established in Ashbourne. He never really gave up the building and joinery work and designed and built several houses in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire in later years. In Ashbourne Hans Peter also took an interest in the scout movement and took many pictures for the scouts. He was also an artist, and illustrated his stamp collections with many watercolours. | ![]() |

H.P. Hansen (at left) was described
as a "joiner and
photographer" in the 1901 Census, but his studio was first listed in
trade directories (at Church Street) in 1904. He continiued
working from Church Street until at least 1908. Then, from
1912
until 1922 the studio was located at Market Place, Ashbourne, and in
1914 and 1918 J. Hansen was also listed (this may has been his wife,
Mary-Jane). Hans Peter produced many stereoscopic views. |

The following images of
members of H.P. Hansen's family were scanned from a selection of
stereoviews produced by him, and currently held by the Matlock Local
Studies Library.
The complete range of stereoviews may be seen on the Picture the
Past web
site, to whom I am indebted for permission to use these
images.
All five appear to have been taken on the same occasion, probably in
Hansen's studio in 1907. Many thanks to HP Hansen's
great-grand-daughter Fiona McNicol for identifying the subjects.
