The following two cdvs, which appear to have been taken in the early 1860s, are the only evidence found of a studio operated by J. Clayton in Stavely.  There are several potential candidates for this photographer.

The 1861 census shows a James Clayton (born c. 1842 at Skegby in Nottinghamshire) living in Staveley.  He was working as a collier, in which occupation he continued in the 1871 (Eckington, Derebyshire) and 1881/1891 (Kimberworth, Yorkshire) censuses, and seems an unlikely person to have operated the studio.

There was, however, a J. Clayton who became a very well known photographer.  According to tradition, James Clayton (1802–1863) opened a photographic studio at Nottingham in the mid-1840s, although the first documented evidence of any Clayton premises was that of his son Walter Clayton (1833–1893), at 8 Greyhound Street, Long Row, Nottingham in 1856.  Another son, James Byron Clayton (1826–1880) opened a studio at 4 Ram Yard, Long Row East by 1857, operating under his baptismal second name Byron, so as to differentiate between his studio and that of his brother.  It is possible that one of James Clayton, his son James Byron Clayton, or his grandson Joseph Byron Clayton (1847–1923) may have worked briefly in Staveley in the early 1860s.
