John Cox was born c. 1846-47 at
Vale House, Tintwistle, Cheshire, not far from the village of Hadfield
in Derbyshire, son of cotton weaver Joseph Cox (1821-1877) and his wife
Ann (1819-1881). In
the mid-1850s the family
moved to Hadfield where John's grandfather had a grocery
business. In 1871, while still living with his parents at 135
Hull St, Glossop, John Cox described himself as a photographer.
He married Ann Howard in 1877, was operating a studio in Hadfield at
least as early as 1878. By 1881, his studio was located at 90
Station Rd, Glossop Dale, where it continued until 1891 and a change of
address to 109 Station Rd, Glossop. John and Ann Cox had three
sons and three daughters. He died in 1894, after which his widow
Ann moved with the children back to her home town of Ashton-under-Lyme,
Lancashire. |
