Joseph Noble
Perks
was the second son of a mechanical engineer John Perks (1846-1915) and
his wife Annie. He was born at Woodville, a small village on
the
Derbyshire-Leicestershire boundary in 1877, shortly after his parents
and
elder brother had moved there from Marsden in Yorkshire, to work in the
sanitary earthenware manufacturing works. By the age of 13 -
from
the April 1891 census - Joseph was working as an office clerk, possibly
at the pipe works. Ten years later in the 1901 census,
however,
he
was working as a photographer, and it was probably at around this time
that he opened his first studio on Swadlincote Road, Woodville. By 1912, J.N. Perks had moved his studio to Church Street, Swadlincote, and he moved again - to the High Street, Swadlincote - prior to the compilation of the 1926-1927 Midlands Counties Trades Directory. |
