James Slinn (1818-1873) & Abraham Slinn (1853-1916)

of High Street, Glossop and Sheffield & Manchester

James Slinn operated a studio in Glossop from 1862 to 1873, after which it was probably taken over by Abraham Slinn until at least 1876.

James Slinn was born in Eyam, Derbyshire in about 1818.  He married Hannah Goodwin (1818-1872) at Glossop in 1846, and by the time of the 1851 Census, he was a stationer and bookbinder living in Chapel Street, Glossop.  Adamson (1997) shows James Slinn as having operated a studio in the High Street, Glossop from 1862 until 1870, although the 1871 Census also shows him as a photographer, and it is likely that he continued taking photos until his death in 1873.

Abraham Slinn was born on 22 May 1853 at Eyam, son of a farmer Samuel Slinn (1817-1903) and his wife Hannah Farnworth Smith.  He may have been related in some way to the abovementioned James Slinn, but this has not yet been proved.  In 1871 he was working as an apprentice to James Slinn in his Glossop High Street studio.  Adamson records him briefly operating as a photographer at High Street West, Glossop in 1876, so presumably he took over James Slinn's studio after the latter's death in 1873.  He married Jane Lomas (1852-1900) at Glossop in 1874.  By 1881, however, Abraham had moved to 78 Mitchell Street, Sheffield, where he was still working as a photographer, although probably employed by a studio, as he is not listed in Adamson (1983).  In about 1885, Abraham moved with his wife Jane and six children to Manchester, where another daughter and son were born.  He worked from variously premises at 54 Halston Street (1886), 208 Oldham Street (1889), 71 Oldham Street (1890), 123 Bury New Rd, Cheetham (1891), 25 Clayton St (1895), 5 Tamworth Street (1896-1899), 30 Drake Street, Stretford Road (1899-1900) and 199 Radnor Street, Hulme (1903).  Abraham Slinn died in April 1916.
