John William
Hilder
was born at Lewisham, Kent in 1857, the eldest son of painter and
decorator
John Hilder senior (1828-1891) and his wife Charlotte Perrett
(1831-1910).
John Hilder senior was originally from Sevenoaks in Kent, and may have
been from the same family as the landscape and portrait artists John
Hilder
(1811-1839) and Richard Hilder (1813-1848). The family moved to
Eltham,
also in Kent, in the early 1860s, where John William grew up.
F.C. Graffton, a photo artist originally from Aberdeen, was also living with Hilder at that time. Further trade directories for 1895 and 1899 indicate that he was still operating from South Parade at that time, and the 1901 census shows that he was in business as a photographer and stationer at 7 South Parade in April of that year. Bradley (2004) states that he continued in business until 1907 - a 1908 trade directory for Matlock Bath shows no sign of him. |
