James William
Ingham
was born at Charlesworth, near Glossop, Derbyshire in 1862, youngest
child
of stone mason Peter Ingham (1821-1874) and his wife Hannah. When
his father died in 1874 - James was only twelve - his mother and a
sister
Eliza opened a draper's business on the High Street in nearby
Glossop.
Another sister, Mary Jane, became a teacher, while his two brothers,
John
and Peter, were stone masons like their father.
After finishing school James too went to work in the draper's shop. This business continued until at least the early 1900s. In 1912, however, probably after the death of his mother, his unmarried sister Eliza was running the shop. A directory for that year shows her as a dressmaker at 71 High Street West, Glossop. James was at the same address, but described as a picture frame maker. It seems likely that he took up photography at around this time, and that the business was fairly short-lived. Adamson (1997) states that he was operating as a photographer in 1912 and 1913. By 1926, James may have moved to New Mills, as a directory for that year shows "J & A Ingham, tailor, 25 New Road." The only example of his work seen so far (below) is a standard postcard with a simple maker's stamp on the reverse. |
