John William Robinson was born at Beverley, Yorkshire in 1875, son of a labourer Frederick Robinson and his wife Ann Elizabeth Stokes.  In 1891 he was working as an errand boy in Beverley, but by 1895 he had opened a photographic studio at West Bars, Chesterfield.  The 1901 Census shows him single and boarding with a family at 67 Foljambe Road.  He married in late 1907.  Adamson shows Robinson continuing with studio at West Bars until at least 1913.  However, he appears to have operated from additional premises at 14a Packers Row (1904), Old Angel Yard, Packer's Row (1906-1907) and Chatsworth Road (1908).

Notes by JF: The three portraits [by J.W. Robinson were] probably all taken at the same session, one being of Ennis Jane Wragg.  There is an identical postcard print from the same negative and a later print refers to this being taken "two years ago" - that card being postmarked July 1905 - so the three are probably about 1903.
