Paul Turner was born c.
1818-1819 at
Boston, Lincolnshire. Nothing is known of his early years,
but in 1861 he appears in Chesterfield, working as a photographer with John Stringfellow.
In 1866 he married Cecilia Lambe at Sheffield, and they had a daughter
Cecilia Betsey, born at Chesterfield in 1867. The first trade directory to show Paul Turner as a photographer in Chesterfield is that of Harrod (1870). Thereafter, he appears regularly in both directories and census records, with a studio at West Bars, until 1891. |

copies of photos found in a old album by my cousin after she
had moved into her parents house. My Marsden ancestors
emigrated
to Wisconsin in 1844 with 10 of their 12 children the 2 who stayed in
England married 2 Vickers brothers, both families living at Whittington
near Chesterfield. Later one of the daughters also joined her parents
in the States leaving just one family in England. I have had contact
with the families in the States who told me there were many exchanged
visits between the families, which was news to me as I had no knowledge
of any American relations until I started my family history.
Going on the messages written on the back of some of the photos, some
were sent from there to my great-grandfather who died in 1876. |

Notes by
BP: As the subjects of the first photograph appear to be aged
approximately in their late 20s or 30s, and my estimate is that it was
taken c. 1863-1867, it seems possible that they are members of your
Marsden family. Perhaps the woman is one of the two Marsden
daughters who remained behind in England and married the a Vickers
brother? If she married at around this time, then it would
have
been a suitable occasion for the portrait to have been taken. |
