The
photographer Thomas
Bell is known from a carte de visite (see below) dated tentatively
as having been taken in the early 1880s. The 1881 Census shows
two
potential candidates living in Eckington, both named Thomas Bell and
working
as grocers and drapers. Adamson (1997) describes him as a "grocer
and draper, agent for W. & A. Gilbey, wine & spirit merchants,
& photographer", with premises on the High street, Eckington in
1883. In an 1887 directory, he is shown only as a grocer, so
presumably the studio was short-lived. |
