Wallace Fidler was born in Chesterfield Derbyshire in 1863, one of at least five children of a rural mail contractor and newsagent (and former hairdresser), George Filder, and his wife Hannah. He grew up in the suburbs of Chesterfield, and by the age of 17 was working as a clerk, perhaps in his father's business. By 1887 he had decided to try his hand at something different, and set up a photographic studio in Cavendish Street (Kelly's). He was only in business for a few years, however, and after his marriage to Eliza Silcock in Yorkshire in late 1889, he settled in South Sheffield, where he became a portrait painter. |

(23 Jun
1866-3 Oct 1953), taken by Wallace Fidler of Cavendish Street,
Chesterfield,
Date unknown but probably late 1880s. Format: Unknown Image © & courtesy of Jeanne Fox Notes: Henry Fox was born at Upper Hallam in Yorkshire, but moved to Old Brampton in Derbyshire as a young man, where he was home-taught by Helen Shipton, daughter of the Rev. George Shipton, vicar of Great Barlow, who also lived at Old Brampton. Henry worked at "Longlands" estate, situated at The Dell, Ashgate Road, Chesterfield. He is reputed to have had an accident there and injured his feet, while training a horse to be ridden side-saddle. |
