William
Housley was born at Edensor
in 1822, son of Ann Housley of Bakewell, and John Norton. He
probably grew up in Bakewell, in the house of his grandparents George
and Mary Housley, and took up the family business of
shoemaking. He married Sarah Newbold at Bakewell in 1850 and
they settled in Church street, Bakewell. By the mid- to late
1850s, he was listed in trade directories as a boot and shoemaker,
with
premises at Vicarage lane in Bakewell. The April 1861 census
shows him and Sarah with 3 year-old son Charles living in New Street -
he was described as a cordwainer, with one employee.
It is not clear when William Housley took up photography - Adamson (1997) states that he started in 1861 - but certainly by 1870 trade directory listings showed him as a "bootmaker & photographer," with new premises in Matlock street, Bakewell. He continued operating the studio for about 35 years. The 1895 edition of Kelly's directory demonstrates that he was still working at both trades, although by the time of the census in April 1901, he was described merely as a bootmaker. William Housley died in 1910. Charles Housley did not follow his father into photography, and is shown in later census records as a tobacconist. |
