Rebecca Housler Britton 1819-1907
Rebecca C. Housler was born July 1, 1819 in Shippen Township, McKean (now Cameron) County, Pennsylvania.  She was the daughter of John Housler and Catherine Chadwick who settled in the region around 1811, being one of the first settlers in the county.  She was the eldest child in a family of  11 children.  Her siblings were:  Sarah b. ca. 1820; William Asbury b. ca. 1821; John Wesley b. 22 Apr 1823; Merrick William, b. 22 Mar 1825; Polly b. 12 Aug 1827; Elihu b. ca. 1829; Asbury Francis b. ca. 1831; Almira R. b. 9 Aug 1835, Freeman b. ca. 1842 and Martha.

She had a son, William Allen Freeman b. 19 December 1839 out of wedlock.  She later married Nathaniel Britton about 1844 and had several children by him:  Theodore Aleman, b. 22 Jan 1845; Mary Lewis b. 1850; Polly J. b. 11 Jun 1851; Augustine St. Claire b. 17 Nov 1853; Sylvenus Freeman b. 29 Jun 1856 and Lucy Brandon b. Feb. 1860.

From some old family stories, Rebecca was a proud woman, and from documents a long-suffering one.  When most people are settled in their lives, her husband was not, probably due to law suits filed against him by Rebecca's own brother, Merrick Housler.  When in their 50s this couple moved, first to Iowa and then in 1867 to Pierce County, Wisconsin where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Her pride stemmed from her family heritage.  The branch of the family from whom she descends (the Chadwick's) were convinced in the early 1800s, that they were the heirs of a large estate in London that had been held in probate for 100 years while descendants were searched for.  It was one of those "if only we could prove it" type things that never amounted to anything.  There is a story that in the 1870s or 80s, two of her Chadwick cousins came from Pennsylvania to visit, and promptly got into a spot of trouble.  Rebecca is reported to have lamented "Why couldn't they have sent some of the good ones."

She died in 1907, having outlived her husband and four of her children.  She is buried in the Spring Lake Cemetery in Pierce County, Wisconsin, next to her husband and many of her descendants.
