Brock - Kentucky Land Grants
Listings for all of the Brock land grants in the
state of Kentucky. These can be ordered online for a small fee at the
Kentucky Land
Office
http://sos.ky.gov/land/
Now available online the Kentucky Land Office is posting data and some images of
County Court Land Patents
at no cost.
When viewing the images that are available there are normally several names
listed that make up the surveying team. The following is a brief
explanation of what those terms are.
Kentucky surveying teams used chains 66' long to
measure lines. (4 poles--1 pole is 16.5 feet.) Some surveying teams used a
two-pole chain. There was one man on each end of the chain--just like the
chainmen you see in today's football games.
The chain carriers or chainmen would measure the
line. A "MK" or Marker would blaze the trees used as corners, or drive a
stake. The HK or Housekeeper (syn. Pilot or Director) would make sure
everything was done correctly. SCM is Survey Chainmen
