The Southern Campain

Captain Samuel Scott's Company of Light Dragoons

Scott's company consisted of men recruited from several counties in Virginia. Men from Pittsylvania and Haifax counties were listed among the deserters from Scott's company in 1777. The list of deserters included a George Brock and John Brock of Pittsylvania County. Also listed in Captain Scott's company was a Vallentine Brock.

Captain Samuel Scott recruited men from Prince Edward and surrounding counties in Virginia as evidenced in the pension application of his widow, Ann Roy Scott. "He commenced his services as a Captain; enlisted a company of Dragoons in the county of Prince Edward & the adjacent counties in said state of Virginia and marched them through North & South Carolina into the state of Georgia, where they were placed on the continental establisment. He continued in active service in the southern department; on the continental establisment. He contined in active service in the southern department; and about the year 1777, his Lieutenants, Walton at one time and Dickenson at another, enlisted additional recruits for him in the said county of Prince Edward, and marched them to the state of Georgia, where they were placed under his command. These recruits, when they were being enlisted, were well known as the recruits of the said Cap. Samuel Scott who was then in the southern army. As Captain he continued in the Georgia line on Continental establisment, until about the close of the year 1778, or early in the year 1779"
