James Barkelow was christened in Readington, Hunterton, NJ on 1 Jan 1731/2 with his parents listed as Jaques and Jannetje Barculo. (1) Based on the ages of his children, he probably married about 1759. His father died in Kingwood, Hunterdon, NJ in 1780 and James probably remained in Hunterdon for a few years. By 1791 he was listed on the tax lists of Hampshire County, VA. (2) The will of James Barkaloo written on 20 Aug 1796 was probated in Hampshire County, VA on 16 Jan 1797. (3) He named wife, Elizabeth. sons: Benjamin and Johnson. Daughters: Sarah Barkelow, Mary Powelnson wife of Abraham, Leanah Beaty wife of Charles and Anne Stout wife of St Leger Stout. On Feb 19, 1798 the children sold the saw mill to Joseph Briggs. All of the heirs of James Barkelow had to agree to the sale. Listed were: Elizabeth, the widow of Jacques Barkelow, Johnson Barkelow, Benjamin Barkelow and Ruth his wife, Sarah Barkelow, Abraham Powelson and his wife Mary, Charles Beatty and Ellender his wife, Saint L. Stout and Ann his wife. (4)
