A Contribution to the Genealogy of the Bearse or Bearss Family in America
1618-1871
by John Bearss Newcomb, 1871
Joseph Bearse, our ancestor, (son of Augustine Bearse), born at Barnstable, Mass., Jan 25, 1752; baptized the same day; died about 1695. He served as a soldier in King Phillips War, 1675-5; his sons having rights in the town of Gorham, Md., granted too his heirs of the soldier who served with Capt. Gorham. He married, Dec. 3, 1676, Martha Taylor, dau of Richard of Yarmouth."
(His father, Augustine Bearse) appears to have been very exact in the performance of his religious duties, causing his children to be baptized on the day of their birth, if Sunday, or on the following Sabbath. His son Joseph, our ancestor, born on Sunday, January 25, 1752, was taken two miles to the church and baptized the same day. Many believed that children dying unbaptized were lost, and that consequentially it was the duty to parents to present their children early for baptism.
