Daniel Brouwer

Daniel Brouwer was baptized 5 Jul 1719 in Hackensack, NJ and was the 9th child born to Abram and Leah Brouwer. (1)  His father, Abram, died sometime between 1725 when he wrote his will and 1731 when Daniel's mother, Leah,  remarried. (2) So, at the age of 12, Daniel moved into the home of his step-father, Roelof Westervelt. Daniel married in 1743 to Maria Koning when he was 23. That record states that Daniel was living at  Schraalenburg, Bergen, NJ and Maria Koning was living at Second River. (3) Eight of their nine children were baptized in Schraalenburgh, NJ., but the second child, Abraham may have been born in Albany, NY in 1745. (4)
Abt. 1774 they moved to Conewago, PA in what was then York County, PA (near Gettysburg). (5) It has been posted that he enlisted in Yorktown, York Co., PA late in Dec. 1776 and served 4 months as private in Capt. Simon Van Arsdalen's PA Co. (6)  His son, Abraham, was in this company. A DAR application says the York Co library has Daniel on the list too, but this cannot be verified. However, we do know Captain Simon Van Arsdalen and Daniel Brouwer were well acquainted. Daniel Brouwer's son John married Jannetje Van Arsdale, cousin of father of Captain Simon Van Arsdale on 3 Apr 1781.   Daniel was also probably part of the militia in Conewago, and thus may have served in the American Revolution in 1781 at the age of 62. (7)   His son Daniel was only 13 in 1781, but boys living on the frontier were in the militia at a very young age. The law passed on 17 March 1777 ruled all white males between the ages of 18 and 53 were automatically enrolled in the militia. (6)  Neither Daniel Brouwer nor his son Daniel qualified under these rules.   Daniel Brouwer's son Abraham was also a private in the same unit. The tax records for Strabane in York County, PA in 1779 show Daniel Brouwer with 200 acres of land. (8)
There was a large Dutch settlement there, but by the 1780's there was interest in moving on. In 1783 Daniel signed a petition requesting land in KY. (9) Then in 1786, the Indians burned thirty-five houses, terrifying everyone. (10) 1786 is also the last year Daniel Brouwer appeared on the tax records.  The Brouwers moved on to Mercer County, KY.  Their grandson, David Brouwer, son of John Brewer, had been baptized in Conewago on April 9, 1786. Their grandson Cornelius Demaree, son their daughter Susanna Demaree, was born 29 Aug 1787 in Harrodsburg, KY (11)
Daniel Brouwer wrote his will on 15 Jan 1791 in Mercer Co KY.  In his will he mentions land holdings both in KY and PA. (12)

6. Daniel Brouwer served as private in the Revolutionary War.  In Pennsylvania he was part of the “minute man” militia.  The Minutemen were members of well-prepared militia companies of select men from the American colonial militia during the American Revolutionary War. They provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that allowed the colonies to respond immediately to military threats, hence the name.  The minutemen were among the first soldiers to fight in the American Revolution, and their troops constituted about a quarter of the entire militia.  Daniel Brouwer enlisted in Yorktown, York County, Pennsylvania late in Dec. 1776.  He served 4 months as private in our ancestor Captain Simon van Arsdalen’s Pennsylvania Co.  During this time, Pennsylvanians like Daniel fought for the Revolution as a part of the New York Militia.

(6) Class numbers assigned

The law passed on 17 March 1777, and all white males between the ages of 18 and 53 were automatically enrolled in the militia. With the institution of this draft, the Associators disbanded. This marks the end of the second major shift in government, but it is also where everything gets hairy for the person interested in the Pennsylvania militia because all sense of normalcy and common sense goes out the window. Brace yourselves, more charts are coming.

The Committees at the county level were also disbanded, and in their place a County Lieutenant and a Sub-Lieutenant were put in charge of all military activity within their county. They held military ranks of Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel, but these men were actually civilian employees under the direction of civil government (so their ranks, while military-sounding, gave them no command in battle). The draft was instituted upon a class roll; that is, each county was to establish eight Battalion districts; these districts could encompass a handful of townships within the county, especially if there were several smaller townships with lower populations. A Battalion consisted of eight Companies of 80 to 100 men. Everyone who met the draft criteria was given a class number between one and eight.[18] Depending on the need, one or more classes could be called up at any given time to serve.

After the Revolutionary War, as the Dutch settlers at Conewago began moving on to settlements in New York and Kentucky, Daniel decided to cast his lot with those going to Kentucky.  Among the signers of the 1783 petition by Conewago settlers for land in Kentucky we find the following:

An interesting aside

Daniel Brouwer, the great grandson of David Demarest, the immigrant, married Maria Koning, the great granddaughter of Adriane Koning, another immigrant.  David Demarest and Adriane Koning came to New York from Amsterdam on the same ship.  The Spotted Cow left Amsterdam on April 16, 1663.
