There is no direct proof that Phebe Cade was the daughter of Elisha W. Cade.  Phebe married David Harbaugh in Jefferson Co., IN on 16 Feb 1848. (1)   She was living in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN in the 1850 census where she was listed as 20 years old and born in Ohio. (2)  The only other Cade in the county in 1850 was Samuel B. Cade who was the son of Elisha W Cade. (3)   The  probable siblings, Samuel and Phebe Cade were both born in Ohio. The mother of Elisha W Cade was named Phebe.  It was very common to name a daughter after your mother.

Phebe and David Harbaugh moved to Lafayette in the early 1850's because David placed an add for his business there in 1855.  They must have prospered at first, but the flood of 1858 must have hurt his business and he listed assets of only $100 in the 1860 census. (4)   David died of consumption in 1867 and in the 1870 census "Febe" was listed as a widow with no assets and no occupation. (5)  She was listed in the city directories at 242 Wabash Ave. Lafayette in 1869 and 1871, but there is no record of her after that. Her oldest daughter, Eleanor, had married in 1866 and her daughter Irena seems to have gone to live with her sister in 1870.  In the 1870 census for Lafayette, "Febe" is living with Charles J. Harbaugh, aged 12 and Martha Harbaugh, aged 8.  Also listed with them is an Eloisa aged 14 who had not been listed before.

There is no record of her dying in Lafayette nor is there any record of what happened to the two younger children.  However we do know that Charles J. Harbaugh was alive in 1897 when he signed guardianship receipts for his niece, Cora Zimmerly.  He may have been adopted by a Charles E Lee and his wife Ellen Cade.  Possibly this Ellen Cade was related to Phobe.

Her daughter, Eleanor, lived in Terre Haute, IN and was married to Joseph P Davis. The Lafayette Daily Courier for Aug 16, 1871 reads, "The meanest man in the world lives in Terre Haute. He refuses to pay for the funeral notice of his mother-in-law." Phebe may have died in Aug 1871.

"
The meanest man in the world lives in Terre Haute. He refuses to pay for the funeral notice of his mother-in-law."

This could be Joseph P. Davis of Terre Haute. His wife was Eleanor Harbaugh, oldest daughter of David and Phebe Harbaugh. Phebe may have died in Aug 1871.
