Thomas Elby Cade
by Susan Brooke
Sep 2022

According to his tombstone, Thomas Elby Cade was born 4 Jun 1771. (1)  He was probably born in Gloucester, New Jersey. (2)  He and married Phoebe Smith, the widow of Mark Hullings, on 12 Dec 1793 in Clarksboro, Gloucester, NJ. (3) In 1794 he was on the tax list for Greenwich, Gloucester, New Jersey.  From 1795-1797 he was on the tax list for Woolwich, Gloucester, NY but never listed with any improved property. (4) In 1801 he purchased 15 acres of land in Deptford that abounded the land of Aaron Cade. (5)   In the 1802 tax record for Deptford Thomas "Kade" and Aaron "Kade" are listed right next to each other. (6) Aaron Cade sold this land the next year. (7)
Thomas Cade and Phoebe his wife, sold land in Galloway, Gloucester New Jersey ("where they dwell") in 1806 and moved to Claremont, OH. (8) He first appeared in the tax records there in 1809 with 90 acres on the East Fork and the original proprietor was named as Richard C Waters. (9) He and Jeremiah Foster were noted as being early settlers of that area. (101) He was on a grand jury in 1809. and Justice of the Peace for Tate Township in 1812. (11)
The War of 1812 began on 18 Jun 1812 and Thomas Cade volunteered from Clermont County on 1 Aug 1812 and served until 25 Aug 1812 as a private under Captain Daniel Cain. (12)
Thomas Elby Cade must have been a very kind person and obviously a good friend to Jeremiah Foster.  Thomas was the appraiser to the estate of Jeremiah Foster in 1810. Guardianship papers were drawn up in July 1816 for his children, Mary and Martha Foster. In March of that year, Martha Foster, who had been working as a "Servant Girl" ran away.  Her employer took out an ad in the Western American newspaper offering a reward.  He referred to her as "about 15 years of age, of a very down and sheepish look, and a long snout nose".  (Martha was 18)  She must have gone to the home of Thomas Elby Cade.  He took her in and put his own ad in the same paper claiming her employer had "kept (her) under and jammed about".  "And as he says about her long snout nose I think it looks better than his own.  The said Girl is at my house, and I shall see her righted." (13)  Six years later on 3 Oct 1822 Martha's younger sister, Mary Foster, married Elijah W Cade, a son of Thomas Cade.  Mary Foster had probably been living with the Cade family for those six years. In 1818 she was a witness to two of the land transactions of Thomas Cade. (14)
Thomas Elby Cade must have been a very large man.  One report has him at 7' 6" tall. (15) He fathered his last child at the age of 83.  He was a tavern keeper while in Clermont, OH. (16) His brother, Samuel Cade, had a shoe shop in the same town at the same time.
In  the 1840 tax record says he lived in Township # 7 (Ohio) on lots #17 and #18 with a fraction of lot #1.  There was a house on lot #17 and another house on lot #1. (17)  His son Elisha had married Mary Foster in 1822 and may have been living in the 2nd house. Also in the 1840 census for Batavia, Clermont, OH is Hiram Cade (son of his brother, Isaac Cade.)
On 16 Jan 1839 Thomas Cade purchased land in Ripley Co. IN. (18)  Phoebe must have died sometime after that transaction, since he married Nancy Jane Leach on 31 Aug 1845 in Ripley Co. IN. (19)  Nancy had married Luman S Gilkey around 1840 and had two children with him.  She divorced him on 6 Aug 1845 and married Thomas Cade on 31 Aug 1845.  Their first daughter was born about 8 months later.  Thomas Elby Cade was 74 years old and his wife Jane 27.  They had five children within a 10 year period.
Thomas had purchased some land with "water and a horse mill on the premises" in March of that year. He operated this grist mill through the 1850's.  In 1854 he sold his land in Ripley County and moved to Cicero, Hamilton County, IN where he built a cabin. (20)  Thomas died in this cabin 19 Dec 1855 just four months after the birth of his last child.  His widow, Jane, stayed on in this cabin where she raised her family.
There is overwhelming evidence that Thomas Elby Cade is the son of Aaron Friend Cade and Mary Barber. (21)

Five mills, or a pinch of snuff reward.
"RANAWAY, strayed or stolen from the subscriber, living in Williamsburg, a Servant Girl, by the name of MARTHA FOSTER, on the evening or night of the 25th of March 1816.  She is about 15 years of age, of a very down and sheepish look, and a long snout nose -- had on when she went away a deep and pale blue wool and cotton frock, a check handkerchief, and a linen apron, and took with her a gingham bonnet, a factory cotton frock of three or four different colours, & some other cloathing.  The above reward will be given to any person who will deliver said girl to me, but no other charges; and all persons are forwarned of harboring her, or they will be proceeded against according to the serverest penalty of the law.  AMOS ALLEY

Take Notice,
That the Five Mills & Pinch of Snuff, has shewn his cloven foot nicely, in advertising this down and sheepish looking girl, as he calls her.  Gentlemen Citizens you can expect no better of any bound child that is kept under and jammed about as she had been for his own talk plainly shows it; or else he would not have said when he was hunting for her, that he did not care a damn for her, only he was afraid she had hung or drowned herself, which is a plain proof how she was bamboosed about. And as he says about her long snout nose I think it looks better than his own.
The said Girl is at my home, and I shall see her righted.  Thomas Cade

(15) The following is from a genealogy found in the Hamilton Co., IN library and probably complied by Mary Evelyn Turner

"To the memory of my mother, Nancy Mae Cade Turner, 1893-1927, granddaughter of Thomas Elby Cade, Sr.

Thomas Elby Cade, B. 4 June 1771 in Northern Ireland, D. 19 Dec. 1855, Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana.
Thomas E. Cade , his wife and five children left Ireland in 1811 and migrated to the U.S. to fight in the War of 1812 for the United States. He was a man of great stature, standing over 7 feet in height and weighing 275
pounds, a man of great strength who could lift a barrel of whiskey (550 pounds) and drink from it. A blacksmith by trade and a professional prize fighter, it is said that he fought for $1.50 a fight, bare fisted, and would take on all comers.
Nancy Jane Leach Gilkey, b 26 Jun 1818 in Ohio, first married Lewman Gilkey, a carpenter, of Rockport, Indiana in 1839 and had two children by him.  Sara Jane, b. 1840 in Ohio and Samuel born in Ohio.  It is said Lewman Gilkey, a carpenter, killed himself, date unknown.
---
When Thomas E Cade came to Ripley County is not yet known but since the records show their marriage to be in 28 Jan 1845, it must have been at that time.  Whether Thomas E Cade went to Ripley County first and was followed by Jane Gilkey or he followed Jane is simply a matter of conjure.  It is known she had 2 brothers, John Leach and Thomas Leach in Shelby Township, Ripley County.  After Great Grandmother Jane Leach Cade moved to Hamilton County all the Leach's also moved to Hamilton County (Arcadia and Cicero) also Jane Leach Cade's father was from Northern Ireland.
Thomas E Cade ran a grist mill while in Ripley County.  There is a place called Cades run in Ripley County, sometimes called Cades branch, north and west of Holton, Indiana

"The Otter Creek Bridge, about one and one half miles north west of Holton was built in 1884 by Thomas Hardman. -- A friendly little stream called Cade's Branch winds its way through the land and finds its way to Otter Creek just south of the bridge.  On the Branch there, lived an Irishman, over eight feet tall, by the name of Thomas Cade.  He operated a mill there in the 1850's."

There is very strong evidence that James, Samuel, Thomas Elby, John, Aaron Jr., Jonathan and Isaac Cade were brothers.  It is also pretty certain that their father was Aaron Friend Cade and their mother was Mary Barber. Mary's father, Thomas Barber, was born and lived his life in Pilesgrove, Salem, NJ.  Mary was a member of the Quaker church there when she met and married Aaron Friend Cade.  In 1766 "there was "testification" against "Mary Cade, formerly Barber, for entering in marriage and other disorders."  So, Aaron Cade and Mary Barber probably married in Pilesgrove about 1766.  The baptismal record for Samuel Cade indicates he was of "Woods town,"  which is a town right next to Pilesgrove and in an 1802 deed he was named as Samuel Cade of Pilesgrove.  Pittsgrove is another town just 15 miles east of Pilesgrove. In 1803 John Cade was purchasing land in Pittsgrove bordering the land of a sister to his wife.  So, John and Samuel were most likely born in that area and we know that is where Aaron Friend Cade and Mary Barber married.  The mother of the wife of James Cade was also born in Pilesgrove, Salem, NJ.
In 1802, John and James Cade were living in Woolwich and James signed as a witness when John and his wife were selling some land. The Trinity Episcopal Church of Swedesboro is right next to Woolwich.  James, Samuel, Jonathan and Isaac all joined that church.  The wife of Thomas Elby Cade married her first husband in that church. Her marriage to Thomas Elby Cade took pace only five miles from there.   On Christmas Day 1809 there was a list of communicants in Trinity Episcopal Church with Samuel and Jonathan Cade listed right next to each other and they had been baptized as adults in this church within two weeks of each other.
In 1801 Thomas Elby Cade purchased 15 acres of land in Deptford that abounded the land of Aaron Cade, Jr.  In 1850 Aaron Cade, Jr. was living with two children of John Cade.  Sarah Phifer and Thomas Jefferson Cade were most likely his niece and nephew.
Thomas Elby Cade migrated to Clermont, OH in 1809 and had a tavern in Williamsburg.  Samuel Cade also moved to Clermont, OH in 1811 and had a shoe shop in Williamsburg.  His granddaughter, Malvina Cade, married Elisha Cade, a son of Thomas Elby Cade. Isaac Cade named his first son, Hiram Barber Cade. He is most definitely a son of Aaron Friend Cade and Mary Barber.   Hiram Barber Cade moved to Clermont, OH in 1828 and named his first two sons Thomas and Samuel.
