The father of Charles Conner, Samuel Conner, died intestate in 1768 and Charles was evidently made executor of the estate.  The next year, in 1769 he is listed as "Charles Conner, planter, of Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co., VA" selling part of his father's land in Loudoun County. (1) In 1772, he sold his father's land in Fairfax County. (2)

His sister, Mary Conner Hopewell, must have been unhappy with the settlement of their father's estate, because in 1771 she and her husband, Samuel Hopewell, brought suit against "Charles Connah" which ended up in Chancery.  (3)

Charles Conner married Elizabeth Smith about 1774.  Elizabeth was also his niece, daughter of his older sister, Winifred Conner and her husband Clator Smith. (See page for Elizabeth Smith). Charles and Elizabeth seem to have had two children, Samuel Conner, who is later named in the Loudoun County Guardian Accounts, (4) and Sarah Conner who married Jeremiah Wade.   (5)

Apparently Charles Conner never made any distribution of his father's estate.  Charles died in 1778 and the suit brought by his siblings, Mary Hopewell, Sibby Reeves, Sally Salter, Winifred Smith, Elizabeth Smith and Jane Conner, against his estate claims, " Charles Conner administered on the estate of the said Samuel Conner and took into his possession all the estate of the said Samuel Conner."  So, in 1788, their case against the estate of Charles Conner went to Chancery Court.  (6)

Charles Conner's brother-in-law, and also his father-in-law, Clator Smith, husband of Winifred Conner, was the administrator for the estate of Charles Conner.  And he also apparently kept all the assets of Samuel Conner for the estate of Charles Conner.  After Charles Conner died in 1778, his widow, Elizabeth Smith, who was also the daughter of Clator and Winifred Smith, married Preston Hampton in Aug 1779.  And Preston Hampton became guardian of a Samuel Conner with income from Clater Smith due this Samuel Conner from 1785.  It looks like Clator Smith was keeping the assets then in possession of the Charles Conner estate for the benefit of Samuel Conner who was the son of Charles Conner and the grandson of Clator Smith.  See page for Elizabeth Smith.  This Samuel Conner seems to have ended up with most of his grandfather's estate.  His sister, Sarah, wife of Jeremiad Wade, brought suit in Chancery against the estate of Charles Conner in 1798.  See page for Elizabeth Smith
