Jacomina De Ruine

Jacomina De Ruine was born in Henegouwe, Hainalt, Netherlands (now Belgium) to Simon De Ruine. Her marriage record and her father's ship record both say they were from "Henegouwe."  (1)  Some researchers think she was the daughter of Simon and an unknown first wife of Simon De Ruine. (2)  Supposedly Simon, her father, who was from Landrecies, which is about 45 miles from Hainault, (3) lived for a short time in The Netherlands before the family sailed for the New World in 1659 on the ship De Trouw (Faith). The wife of record on this ship was Magdalena Vanderstraaten, and there are no children listed. (4)  We assume Jacomina was born  before 1652 since she was probably over 16 when she married on 9 Sep 1668 in NY to Jean De Marets. (5) There are also reports that Jacomina had a sister named Jannetje DeRuin.  This Jannetje married on 31 Dec 1659, soon after the boat's arrival. (5)  Her marriage records reads "Jan Dupree, wid van Margariet Orommete; Jannetje Symons, van Amsterdam", and it has been assumed she was a daughter of Simon De Ruine. She had several children, one of which was baptized in 1667. This daughter, Maria, was baptized to "Jean Dupre" and wife "Jannetie" with the witness, "Jacomina Drun", (Jacomina De Ruine). (6)  Jacomina and Jannetje seem to be sisters and Jannetje was old enough to marry in 1659, so she was probably born before 1643 in Amsterdam as recorded in her marriage record. (5) If Simon de Ruine did indeed live in Henegouwe before he moved to Amsterdam, then Jacomina was born before Jannetje. Jacomina deRuine may have been born about 1641. If she was born that early, she married at the age of 28 and her last child, Samuel Demarest, was born when she was over 46.
Three additional siblings to Jacomina and Jannetje were born in NY after their arrival: Barteltje baptized 26 Oct 1659, Maria baptized 1 Jan 1662 and Magdalena baptized 21 Jun 1665. So, the first two daughters of Simon De Ruine, Jacomina and Jannetje, were probably born in the early 1640's and the next known child, Barteltje, was born 15 years later in 1659, making it seem likely there may have been two different mothers of these children. And, there are at least 24 years between the birth of the first and last child.  Magdalena Vanderstraaten could be the mother of all five children, but there is no proof.
Maria De Ruine, who was born 1 Jan 1662, who was either the sister or half sister of Jacomina De Ruine, married Samuel Demarest on 11 Aug 1678, a brother to the husband of Jacomina de Ruine.  They were often witnesses at the baptisms of each other's children. (6)
Jacomina de Ruine died before March 1692. (7)

Jean married (1) Jacomina DeRuine, born in the Province of Hainault, France, September 9, 1668, at New York. -- Jacomima DeRuine was the daughter of Simon Druine (1615-1678) and Magdalena Van Derstaaten.  The notice reads; "Jan DeMarest j. m. Van Walcheren, Zeeland, Sept. 9, 1668, Jacomyne Drinus Van Bylanderzy in Henegouwe." The notice of Jean's second marriage reads: "Jean de Marets widr Van Jacomina Driel."

Simon De Ruine was born in 1615. He married Magdalena Vander Straaten, daughter of Ladowycks Van Der Stratten. Simon De Ruine died in 1678.
Simon De Ruine, father of Marie, wife of Samuel Demarest, and of Jacomina, wife of Jean Demarest, styled himself a Walloon, although he is reported to have come from Valenciennes near Landrecy. In order to escape religious persecution he went to Holland, where he remained for 15 years. Here he married twice, his second wife being Magdelena Van der Straaten. Nothing is known concerning his first wife, other than that she was the mother of his two older daughters, born in Holland, about 1645 and 1647. These children accompanied their father and step-mother when they came to America. They sailed on the ship De Trouw, a private trader which left Harlingen, Holland, Feb. 13, 1659. Simon's name appeared on the passenger list as "Symon Drune from Henegouw". Fellow passengers we  re Epke Banta and Jllis Jansen Mandeville. Simon was one of thirty-two men who settled in Harlem to the north of New Amsterdam. The original allotments of land were soon taken up by an influx of settlers who gave their attention to farming. Simon first owned two lots on Jochem Pieters Flat, and in 1662, acquired Lot #3 of the same grant, which lay between the Harlem River and old Kingsbridge Road. He resided at at Henegouw, Holland, Netherlands, before 12-Feb-1659. He and Magdalena Vander Straaten immigrated on 12-Feb-1659 to New Netherlands; aboard the ship "De Trouw."

pg. 100 Simon De Ruine, another refugee (familiarly known as Le Qualion, - that is, the Walloon), born a name fund at Valenciennes, near Landrecy, escaped too Holland, tarrying there for some years. He went out with his wife, Magdalena Vanderstraaten, and several children, in the ship Faith, "a private trader going to the Manhattans," which sailed February 13, 1659, with nearly a hundred passengers, De Ruine being the only Frenchman.

pg 246 Simon de Ruine, otherwise called de Waal, the Walloon, was originally from Landrecy, in Hainault, as before noticed.  Having sold his land in Harlem, in 1666, he bought a few acres in Flushing, near Jean Gensung, and is named on the rate list of 1675. (Doc. Hist. N Y ii 461) On April 27, 1678, the Sieur Dubuisson drew up his will: a copy is here given.  it was proved June 12, 1678.  Simon was sick, and perhaps in extremis, as he did not put his hand to the will, and thus its date may be of his death. As he always made his mark, and his name takes many forms in contemporary records, we follow Dubuisson as probably correct. --- Simon had, with other children, Jacomina, born near Landrecy, who married John Demarest; Jannette, born at Amsterdam, who married John De Pres; and Maria, born at Harlem, who married Samuel Demarest

Simon de Ruine has double trouble with his name.  As he was a Walloon and descended from French Protestant refugees, the Dutch called him De Waal, while the French settlers designated him le Quallon.  In 1659 Simon brought to America, in the ship De Trouw, his wife, Magdalena Van Derstraaten, and two daughters, Jaconima, born near Landrecy, on the Sambre, near Hainault, and Jannetze, born in Amsterdam. Jacomina married John Demarest, her sister, Maria, married Samuel Demarest and Jannetze, shortly after arriving here, became the helpmate of Jan de Pre, a Fleming of Walloon descent.  Simon de Ruine lived first in Harlem but later occupied a house in Smith's Valley - about the present Wall and Pearl Streets.  Having buried Magdelena, wife of his youth, Simon, the immigrant de Ruine, acquired a second mate. One of the daughters of the latter marriage became the wife of Cornelius Epke Banta, of Hackensack, N.J. Among Simon's Banta descendants were Jannetze, who in 1690, married Johannes Myer; Marrytie, wife of Samuel Provoost; Isaac, who married a Scotch lassie, Lydia Campbell, and Benjamin, who married successively Sarah, daughter of Joseph Riggs, and Rachel Johnson.

The ship left from Harlingen, Holland, Netherlands and arrived in New Netherland on the 12 Feb 1659. The name on the passenger list is "Symon Drune" from Henegouwen (Hainaut). ^[3] Fellow passengers were Epke Banta and Jellis Jansen Mandeville.

Jan de Pre, born at Commines in 1635 - a Fleming, but of Walloon or French descent, judging from his surname - was a cooper, and before coming to Harlem lived several years as a "small burgher" in New Amsterdam, where he married in 1655 a Scotch lassie, Margaret, daughter of John Cromartie.  His present wife was Jannetie, daughter of Simon de Ruine, married in 1659.  De Pre finally went to New Untrecht, and thence to Staten Island.  By his first wife he had Andries, born 1656, and by his second wife, Jannetie, born 1662, Francina, 1665, Maria, 1667, John, 1671 Simon, 1676. Jannetie married Cornelius Banta, of Hackensack, where her uncles, the Demarests, resided.  She died and Banta married her cousin Magdalena Demarest.  Banta was a son of Epke Jacobs Banta, farmer, from Harlingen, common ancestor of the prolific family bearing that name, and who with his wife and 5 children emigrated in the same ship with Simon de Ruine.
