From the patronymics of his three known children, we know his name was Gerrit Dorland. (1) He was probably born about 1616 possibly in Kortenhoef, Nord Holland, Nederland.  The name Dorland has been found in early records of four adjacent communities, Kortenhoef and Hilversum in Noord Holland and Breuckelen-Nyenrote and Vreeland in Utrecht. (2) 
When his sons gave their Oath of Allegiance in September 1687, "Jan Gerrise Dorland" said he had been there for 35 years and "Gerret Dorland", who was born about 1655, said he was a native. (3)  This makes the family arriving around 1652.  Possibly his first wife, the mother of Jan Gerritse Dorland, had died and Gerrit Dorland remarried in New York. It is assumed that his daughter, Styntje Dorland, was born about 1658 as she married in 1683.  Gerrit Dorland may have died shortly after her birth.
