Nathaniel Hall

According to the Hall genealogy written in 1883, Nathaniel Hall was born 19 Sep 1776. (1) This would made him in "his 50th year of his age" when he died as recorded in his cemetery record .  However, there is no other corroborating evidence to the date of birth.  This same Hall genealogy says that he married Esther Parker on 4 Mar 1801.  He was 24 years old at that time and Esther 20.  Esther died on 24 Mar 1808 leaving him with 3 small children. He remarried to Cynthia Mason nine months later on 8 Dec 1808.
Nathaniel Hall lived in Whitehall, NY and was a lawyer and judge. (2) He was quite tall with broad shoulders. (1)
According to the cemetery register for Williams Street Cemetery in Whitehall Nathaniel Hall died 31 Oct 1825. (3) Nathaniel's stone was not found but it supposedly reads Hon. Nathaniel Hall married to Esther.
Sons, Nathaniel Hall b. 1802 and Albert Gallatin Hall b. 1805 married cousins, Lucy Walker b. 1806 and Emily Walker b. 1805

(Family 152) Nathaniel Hall, pedigree as above. b. Sept. 19, 1776; d. Oct. 30, 1825; m. 1st March 4, 1801, Esther, dau. of Peter Parker, d. March 24, 1808, ae. 28 years; m. 2d, Dec. 8, 1808, Cynthia Maus, d. Jan 2, 1832; he resided at Whitehall, NY, was a lawyer and held the office of judge. In his personal appearance he was quite tall and broad shoulders, with prominent features, resembling in a remarkable degree the portraits of the celebrated Rev. Robert Hal. of England; they descended, probably, from the same ancestry in Warwickshire, England. Judge Hall was a man of very decided influence in his town and county. He died while on a visit to his kindred in his native town, Lebanon, N. H.

From 1847 to 1878, Dr. Asa Fitch of New York state collected a series of articles towards a history and genealogy of Washington County and the surrounding region. The numerous genealogical entries and family records featured in this manuscript trace the growth of the original families who arrived in the 1760s and the New England settlers who arrived just prior to the Revolutionary War, carrying their descent into the 3rd, 4th and sometimes 5th generations.

At right are copies of his notes from his interview on August 16, 1850 with John Clark Parker, oldest son of Peter Parker.

#759 Esq. Parker's family

John C Parker Esq. of North Granville, informed me August 16, 1850, that all he knows of his family, is back as far as his grandfather.

Thomas Parker, lived and died at Washington, CT. His wife was Abigail Dutton.  He had six sons, or more, viz:

Peter, my father was the third son,  next older than Dr. Joseph.  He was born, I think, at Bethlehem, Ct; married Esther daughter of John Clark of Chatham Ct.; lived in Farmington, then in Salisbury a year or two, then in Clarendon VT. a year or two, and finally moved to Granville, coming here at the time of Shay's Rebellion, 1786?  He died here December 1838, aged almost 86.  His children are:

John C (myself) born Farmington ? Ct. Nov 9, 1775. esq Parker has been surrogate of the county 1844.  Town Clerk 9 years etc.

Rebecca, wife of Dr. Ira Hall of Middle Granville, died 1816 (no will in record)

Esther, wife of Hon. Nathaniel Hall of Whitehall; he died some 18 yrs ago. (no will)

Luther, moved to Mount Morris & died there about 25 years ago etc.

Hon William H lived in Whitehall and died there Nov 25, 1849. etc.

There are no primary documents that we have that prove that Esther Parker was the daughter of Peter Parker or the wife of Nathaniel Hall. We have had to rely  on Asa Fitch's article entitled " Memorial of the Ancestors and Descendants of Peter Parker of Washington New York " We think it is a good source .

First of all Fitch interviewed two sons of Peter Parker, John C Parker and William H Parker. In both cases Fitch says he knew both of them well. As brothers they would have known their sister Esther very well. All of these Parkers lived in Whitehall in the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds. So if the purported brothers were truthful not only do we know from their accounts that she was their sister but also that she was married to Nathaniel Hall. We also were able to prove that John C Parker was indeed the son of Peter Parker.

In addition we took a photograph in 2005 of the tombstone of Esther Hall in Williams Cemetery, Whitehall NY. We could not find Nathaniel's tombstone but could see the name Esther Hall and the year 1808 on the tombstone. We also found an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register of someone who had written down the inscriptions of the tombstones in Williams Cemetery. From the looks of the arrangement of the inscriptions he listed them one after the other and sure enough next to the stone for Nathaniel Hall is one for Esther Hall that says that she died in 1808 at the age of 28 years and that she was Nathaniel's wife. The implied date of birth agrees with the date given in the article.
