John Hannah

John Hannah was probably born in Henry Co. VA about 1789.  William Hannah, the probable father of John Hannah, was living in Patrick County, VA when his sons were reaching adulthood.  The Personal Property Tax of Patrick County for 1807 listed William Hannah with 2 white males over 21.  His oldest son, Gabriel, must have been over 21.  The 1809 record also shows two white males.  But in 1810 the Personal Property Tax for Patrick Co., VA shows William Hannah with 2 white males over 21 and the next listing is for Gabriel Hannah. (1)  From this we know that William Hannah had two sons: Gabriel who turned 21 before 1807 and another son who had turned 21 by 1810 and was therefore born about 1789.
William Hannah's brother Robert moved to Greenup County, KY by 1807 and the Greenup County, KY census for 1811 lists both Robert Hannah and Gabriel Hannah. (2) However, the 1810 census for Greenup County, KY listed Robert Hannah with only 3 males and none of them could be John Hannah and since John Hannah did not marry until 1812 it is most likely he was still living with his father in 1810. (3)
From his Revolutionary War Application we know that William Hannah moved to Greenup Co about 1812. (4) John Hannah married Susannah Barklow in Greenup County on 5 Mar 1812. and his brother Gabriel Hannah married Jane Young in Greenup county on 11 Apr 1812. (5) So, we know this family had moved to Greenup by 1812.  In the 1820 census for Greenup County, KY there is a listing for William Hannah, Townley Hannah (a brother to William), Gabriel Hannah (the oldest son of William Hannah), Robert Hannah (brother to William Hannah) all listed right next to each other and there is a listing for John Hannah on the previous page. (6)
There is no concrete proof that John Hannah was the son of William Hannah.  However, we do know that William Hannah had a son the right age to be John. Robert Hannah only had one son aged about the age of John Hannah and his name was George Washington Hannah. (3)  And John Hannah appeared in Greenup County at the same time as the rest of the family. Hannah is not that usual a name.  And, there is a remarkable family resemblance.  Below is a photo of the triplets born to John Hannah and a photo of the grandchildren of John Hannahs's sister, Mary Polly Hannah. (7)  And we know that Mary Polly Hannah was a daughter of William Hannah. (8)
As stated, John Hannah married Susannah Barklow in Greenup Co., KY on 5 Mar 1812.  They had eight children with the last three being triplets.  According to article written about his triplet sons and also the obituary of his sons James Hannahs, John Hannah moved his family to Portsmouth, Scioto, OH about 1830. (9) There is no record of John Hannah in Portsmouth, so it is assumed he died in Portsmouth around 1830.

(3) 1810 census Greenup County, KY

There is only one male listed between the ages of 10 and 15 living with Robert Hannah in the 1810 census for Greenup County.  Our John Hannah did not marry in Greenup County until March 1812 and was probably living with his father in 1810.  The male living in the household of Robert Hannah in Greenup County, KY is George Washington Hannah.  The widow of Robert Hannah had her will filed in April 1857 in which she named George Hannah as an heir.  In the 1850 census  for Greenup County, George Hannah was born about 1797 and in the 1860 census for Greenup County, George Hannah was born about 1795 so he is the male between the ages of 10-15 in the 1810 census for Robert Hannah in Greenup County, KY.

See page for Mary Polly Hannah
Mary Polly Hannah was born 19 Jan 1788 in Patrick County, VA and Died 24 Sep 1868 in Carter County, KY.  She married John Anglin in Patrick County, VA on 21 Jan 1811.  Their first child, Lucinda, was born in VA about 1811 and then they moved to Greenup Co. KY.  Mary Polly's husband, John Anglin, was listed in the 1811 census for Greenup along with Mary Polly's brother, Gabriel, and their uncle Robert Hannah.  Their daughter, Lucinda, was given some gifts from "her grandfather William Hannah" in 1821 and 1824.  On 21 Mar 1826 Lucinda married Alexander Hannah, a son of Robert Hannah.  The marriage record stated that she was the daughter of John Anglin and the bondsman was William Hannah.  All these records clearly indicate that Mary Polly Hannah was the daughter of William Hannah.

(9) Newspaper article on the triplets.
 Portsmouth Times April 10, 1880

An account appeared in the Cincinnati papers recently of a re-union of triplets, the brothers Block, in that city, and mention was made of the fact that this was the only case on record where triplets were known to reach the age of maturity. This is a mistake. Most of our middle-aged citizens will remember the three Hannahs boys, two of whom are living yet, and one of whom died at the age of twenty-five. These boys were born in Greenup county, KY in 1830, but their parents came to Portsmouth when the children were in their infancy and continued to reside here until their death.
The twins were named respectively "Meshack," and "Shadrak" and "Abednego," and resembled each other so closely in features, form and voice and disposition as to make it almost impossible for one not accustomed to them to tell t'other from which. They were smart, bright and healthy, and their distinguishing characteristic was deviltry, with a dash of audacity which was rather attractive, and made them marked characters not only among their youthful associates, but to every one in the place. Everyone knew the "Shacks," as they were familiarly called, and many of our elderly citizens, who were then merchants in the prime of life, will remember the antics of these devil-may-care youths. A favorite trick of theirs was, when one of their number was caught in a piece of mischief and held to account by some irate citizen, to protest, with the greatest appearance of innocence, that it was one of his twin brothers who was the guilty party, and the citizen would have to be sharp-eyed indeed if he could swear that the boy before him was the offender. They were not vicious, but would fight at the drop of the hat, especially for one another, so that it passed into a maxim that if anyone whipped any one of the "Shacks," he was pretty sure to have to whip all three of them. They attended the Fourth street school and obtained a fair education, and when they became older on the river and became popular river stewards. Shadrack died in 1855, aged twenty-five, and the other two are married and living near Terre Haute, Indiana. Mr. James Hannahs is one of our best known citizens, and is the only surviving brother of the triplets, but they have a sister residing in Indiana. Another sister was the first wife of James F. Ross."

Obituary of James Hannahs
"James McKoy Hannahs was born in Greenup county, Ky., December 16, 1822. His father was John Hannahs, a brick-layer and his mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Susan Barklow, a daughter of Benjamin Barklow. His father and mother had eight children: Ruth, married Richard H. Porter of Newport, Ind.; Ira Allen; James; Sarah Jane, married Joseph Cook, M.D., of Newport, Ind.; Susan married James Ross the tailor; the next three were triplets, Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego born, May 20, 1830. All three grew to maturity. Shadrack died in 1885 at the age of 25; Abednego died in 1880 and Meshack is living in Newport, Ind. The latter was in the Civil war in the 14h Indiana Infantry and was wounded at Antietam.
James, our subject, came to Portsmouth when he was eight years old, and has made Portsmouth his home ever since."
