Ruth S Hannahs

Born: 25 Nov 1816  Greenup Co., KY
From Shepard Family Bible
Married 23 Feb 1852 Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH   notice in the Portsmouth Times and Clipper on March 3, 1852
Died: 30 May 1889  Newport, Vermillion Co., IN Found in Susan Hannah's scrapbook "Porter - Ruth S. Hannah was born in Greenup co., Ky., Nov. 25,,1811, whence she moved to Portsmouth, O, at which place she was married Feb. 3,1852 to Richard H. Porter. After marriage they moved to Newport, Ind., where she died May 30, 1889. Sister Porter had been a member of the Methodist Church since she was thirteen years of age, and gave evidence of her piety and Christ likeness by caring for the needy and fatherless. Having no children of her own, she was a mother to six orphan children that she from time to time took to her heart and home, and cared for as tenderly as their own mothers could have done. This seemed to be her special work to do, and she did it, and did it well. Her death was the result of heart disease, and took place immediately after she had risen from her bed, and while sitting by the fire in her old arm chair. R.S.M."
In her will, dated Sep 2, 1873, Ruth Porter named her niece, Susan R. Hannahs.  She gave her all her parlor furniture, china and Silver Ware, buggy and harness, two spring mattresses and the bedstead and her gold watch on the condition, "she shall give her watch to her Sister Sarah if she is living." Ruth also gave Susan all of her real estate with the stipulation that Susan provide for Ruth's brother, Meshack Hannahs, in the manner of an annual annuity of $50.
