Thomas Hart, born 1643; died Aug. 27, 1726; 83 years old.  He was an ensign in 1678, a lieutenant in 1693 and a captain in 1695.  When he died he was  buried with military honors. He inherited one quarter of his  father’s farm and according to the Genealogical Notes On the Founding of New England, "He and John Hooker, grandson of the Rev. Thomas Hooker, were the two prominent  men of the town."  When he died his estate comprised 2,000 acres. He married Mary Smith sometime before April 26, 1665 as John Winthrop Jr. treated the "wife" of Thomas Hart on that date.  Mary died about 1675.  She may have given birth to a son named Stephen about that time.  Thomas was left with two daughters, Mary 11 years and and Margaret just 5.  He remarried to Ruth Howkins and fathered five more children.
