Johann Heinrich (Henry) Helfer was about 16 when his father died.  So he probably travelled with his mother and sisters to the United States about 1838.  I have found no record of him until 1844 when he is found in the Louisville City Directory living on 11th between Main and Market.  His occupation is listed as boatman.
1844 City Directory for Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY listing Henry Helfer as boatman

In 1847 he married Julianna Kussler in St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Louisville, Jefferson County KY.  In the 1850 census he is living in Louisville with his wife and two children.  His wife, Julianna, died two months after the birth of their last child.  He then married Sarah Furhmann in St Paul's Evangelical Church and had a daughter, Luisa, in 1854.

After that there is no trace of Henry or of his second wife, Sarah.  In 1860 his daughter Luisa is living with John Froman (most likely a relative of Sarah Furhmann)  in Franklin, Harrison Co., IN.  However, Lena Helfer born in 1848 is nowhere to be found.  However, Lena married John Herter in 1864 in New Middletown, Harrison County, IN so she was probably living with some relative in Harrison County in 1860.

By 1860 Henry's sister Margaret Helfer Zimmerly had moved to Olney, Richland, IL but the family of his other sister, Maria Elizabetha Helfer Fiock was still in New Middletown.  Henry's sister Barbara Helfer Dutt died in September of 1860 in Louisville.
