John Hopewell

There are three men named Hopewell living in Loudoun County, Virginia in the 1760's.  John Hopewell, married to Hannah King, is living in Cameron Parish next to his father-in-law.  When he died in 1766 he named his brother Thomas Hopewell as executor, but there is no listing for Thomas in any of the tithable records.  Over in Sherburne Parish, Loudoun County, there is a Samuel Hopewell who appears in the records at the same time as John.  They may all be brothers, but it is not proven. However, in 1762 there is evidence that Samuel Hopewell might have been in a business opportunity with a William King.  Hannah King's father had a brother named William.
The first time John Hopewell shows up in the records in the1760 tithables for Loudoun Co, VA.  He is listed next to John King, most likely living with his father-in-law. (1)  He is in the Loudoun Co tithables again in 1762 still listed with the King family.  He is also recorded a couple of times between 1762-1764 in the court order books.  (2) He was still a young man, but he wrote his will on 21 Mar 1766 and died a few weeks later as the inventory of his estate was taken 9 Jun 1766. He had six children according to his will and at least two were small children: Mary who was about 4 and Samuel who about 2 years old.  His wife, Hannah King, remarried by Jun of 1769 to Henry Talbot as she signs an accounting of her husband's estate as "Hannah Talbot late Hannah Hopewell."  Their two small children were bound over to her new husband in 1776.
